My trip to Barcelona didn't start out as planned. Getting on the plane to go there was the hardest part. There was stress, forgotten passports and thoughts of despair, but once we arrived, all bad feelings melted away. Just the drive from the airport was enough to replace any negativity with wonder and awe. It took only a few hours of being in this enchanting city, for me to know that it would forever leave a mark on me. I always say that Barcelona is one of the very few cities that I could see myself living and thriving in. Taking a trip there will never feel like enough, but I want to share with you 5 reasons why you need to book that trip to Barcelona.

1. The Atmosphere

No matter where I go in Barcelona, there is a wonderful atmosphere I just can't get over. The people are happy, the weather is mild and the possibilities are endless. For example:

  • Las Ramblas

This is the most popular central meeting place of locals and tourists alike. Las Ramblas is a long street in Barcelona where you can find shopping, artisans and that special magnet you've been searching for to buy for your mother. In this area, you can find some of Barcelona's best nightlife. There are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants to enjoy and you are within a few minutes walk of Barcelona Cathedral, the historic quarter (Barri Gotic) and Placa Reial.

  • Parc de la Ciutadella

I love spending time in grandiose, beautiful parks in every city I go to. Large trees, grass fields, peaceful ponds and the sound of children playing all culminate into what I consider my happy place. It's always a soothing feeling to find a sort of respite in the middle of a bustling city. This is one of those such parks. Parc de la Ciutadella is a great place to kick back and relax.

Pro Tip: The zoo is also located  adjacent to the park and so is the Arc de Triomf, so there's lots to do and see.

  • Las Arenas

This place is amazing. With the ban on bullfighting in Catalonia, this beautiful arena was turned into a shopping center. Unfortunately, in October of this year that ban was overturned, much to the dismay of Catalans. Doesn't matter for this great space, it's already been put to better use. Coupled with the various restaurants on the roof, this is the perfect place for a night out.

  • Port Vell and the Maremagnum Shopping Center

The distinctive Maremagnum building sits at the end of a wavy wooden pier that is always teeming with people. It's gorgeous mirrored walls and roof reflect the sun and water around it, giving it a quite beautiful, glistening glow. I love seeing people relaxing on the boardwalk, eating, conversing and watching the boats come in and out of the port. There are many stores within the mall that provide great shopping and a few restaurants too.

2. Sightseeing

The sightseeing options are endless...

  • Sagrat Cor- Tibidabo Mountain

  • Magic Fountain of Montjuïc

3. Antoni Gaudí Architecture

There is no one architect that represents Barcelona more than Antoni Guadi. His vision and work can be seen all over the city, especially in the city center. It is organic in nature, mainly because he draws his inspiration from nature itself. His use of unique shapes and tile work make his work distinctive. Whenever I come across any of his work, I can't help but stand in awe at the detail and perfectionism.

  • La Sagrada Familia

This may just be Antoni Gaudi's crowning achievement, even though it hasn't quite been achieved yet. 5 generations have witnessed the rise of la Sagrada Familia. The project started in the 1800's and is set to finally be completed in 2026. I'm more than excited that this massive undertaking will be finished in time for our generation and our children to see.

Pro tip: Get tickets online. That way, despite the fact that you'll still be in line, you will be able to avoid the even longer, more painful line to get tickets.

4. The Amazing Food

  • La Boqueria

This is the largest market in Barcelona. It's located off of Las Ramblas and you can find everything here.

  • Tapas

Tapas are small plates. This way of eating is very popular all over Spain and Barcelona is no exception. My personal favorite is the pulpo (octopus).

  • Paella and Sangria

Best combination... Turns out there are quite a few different types of paella. I love seafood, preferably by the beach with a glass of sangria (or pitcher, **Don't judge me**)

5. The Public Transportation System

The public transportation system in Barcelona is fantastic. The city is well-connected and you can get pretty much anywhere you need to go. The taxis are also easy to find, as they are designated by their black and yellow color. Make sure to wear your seat belt though. It is the law there, even in the back of a taxi.

Pro tip: Purchase the Barcelona Card so that you can get unlimited travel on the buses, metro, tram and the train to and from the airport. The Barcelona Card also gets you discounts to some attractions around the city and can even get you into a few for free! They can be purchased for a 3, 4 or 5 day duration and are definitely worth the money.

Best player on earth... Lionel Messi

Best player on earth... Lionel Messi

Priceless indeed. I am a little biased in this respect, considering that I am such a big Barça fan, but this has to be one of the best attributes of this city. Any true sports fan can truly appreciate the illustrious history of the club. From the star-studded past, present and future rosters to the grand stadium, this is a bit of a dream world. Make sure to visit the museum and participate in the Camp Nou Experience, which includes a fantastic tour of the stadium and an immersive history lesson on the storied club. Don't forget to have your picture taken with the Champions League trophy! Força Barça!!!!

Barcelona provides endless options for food, culture, relaxation and fun. I believe everyone should experience all that this beautiful city has to offer and maybe someday soon, I will find myself back there, living my dream as a Barcelona local.
